Membership at Joy: “Come as a Visitor - Leave as a Friend”
Membership at Joy includes many privileges and responsibilities. Members at Joy are expected to:
1. make regular use of the means of grace, both Word and sacraments; at the very minimum, every active member of Joy will receive Holy Communion at least one time during a calendar year.
2. live a Christian life in accordance with the Word of God and the teachings of the Lutheran church; and
3. support the work of this congregation and churchwide ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America through contributions of their time, abilities, and financial support as biblical stewards.
To be a member of Joy Lutheran, you must be a baptized Christian. This baptism can be at Joy, or as part of another congregation, and can be at any time during an individual’s life. Following the ancient tradition of the Christian church, we believe baptism in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is “once for all” (The Use of the Means of Grace, pg. 110). Baptism is not repeated, but can be re-affirmed regularly within the worship life of the congregation.
Confirmed (Adult) members of Joy are baptized persons who have received the rite of Confirmation in this congregation, those who have been received by adult baptism, by transfer or by affirmation of faith during worship. All confirmed members are voting members of the congregation, and have the responsibility and privilege to provide leadership of this congregation through annual business meetings of the congregation, and participation in Joy Lutheran’s ministries throughout the year.
